The Sport for Life swim programme is a comprehensive course based on the UK's National Plan for Teaching Swimming. It focuses on skill development, stroke development, and understanding and awareness. Children progress from parented classes all the way through to competitive swimming, and along the way they have the option of gaining the UK Amateur Swim Association Awards Scheme.
Children are placed in classes according to ability, so for all classes from Ducks and above we carry out a short initial assessment. Ages are given as an approximate guide.

Class Descriptions
Starfish, Lobsters (Parented)
The aims of these classes are water familiarisation, water confidence and acquisition of basic skills. As children progress and grow older, they will develop greater competence and independence in the water. The instructor will run a fun games and activities through each child¨s parent or helper.
Awards available: Ducklings 1 and 2
Ducks
Water confidence and safety continue to be developed through structured play. The main outcomes include moving around freely, floating and using arms and legs to achieve a simple form of travel.
Awards available: Ducklings 3
Turtles 1 and 2
This phase moves from initial confidence to building a foundation and developing control in the water, including breathing, competence in the basic skills and stroke development including different types of kicks.
Awards available: Ducklings 4 and 5, ASA Levels 1 and 2
Swim Fundamentals 1 and 2
The aim is to consolidate aquatic skills and develop kicking and pulling, using correct basic technique. All the main swimming strokes are introduced with an emphasis on streamlining and breathing control. To join Swim Fundamentals 2, children need to be able to travel 10m on the front or back, and 5m with an over water recovery. They should also be able to tread water.
Awards available: ASA Levels 3-6
Seals 1 and 2
To progress to Seals, children should be stroke-efficient over 25m in at least two strokes as well as have basic ability in the other two strokes. The emphasis moves to efficiency and effectiveness of all four strokes. At the end of this stage, children should be efficient in at least 3 strokes and they can swim 100m comfortably in a stroke of their choice. Water skills remain a part of lessons.

Competition 1 and 2
Stroke refinement continues and we introduce the early stages of training for competitive swimming. Basic aerobic swimming and more advanced activities and skills are also worked on. To join Competition 1, children need to be able to swim 10m butterfly full stroke; swim 25m: backstroke or front crawl, and butterfly or breaststroke; swim 100m smoothly in a stroke of their choice with efficient turns. In Competition 2 competitive training techniques are also used to ensure to build aerobic fitness, with an average distance of 2000m covered. To join children need to be able to swim 150m in a stroke of their choice with efficient technique, and swim 25m on each stroke with an appropriate turn.
